To develop a computer game and make money, it is important to create an awesome app for Android or iOS considering the harsh competition in the industry. What it takes to develop app that sells is an engaging narrative and the right game mechanics that keep users playing for hours. Whether creating an arcade, casual, or word game or a platformer to make money, it is an exciting endeavor to develop a game that is enjoyable, entertaining, and engaging.
Types of Games
To get started, the first step is to choose from different types of games, the main being mobile, computer, and console. PC games can be sold offline or online and require a mouse and keyboard to play.
Mechanics
Incorporating the right set of mechanics is the key to success and depends on the target audience. Examples include journeys, badges, levels, and internal currency that allow users to complete different activities. App developers also use points, leaderboards, and progress bars or boards as well as challenges and social interaction. The set of mechanics to use depends on the types of players that you wish to engage.
Target Audience
A study by Marc Hulsebosch at the University of Twente divides players into four categories – killers, socializers, explorers, and achievers. Socializers are mainly interested in interacting with others while playing while explorers focus on the game world itself. For killers the main focus is on combating other players and for achievers achievements matter the most.
In a survey involving 3,000 players, respondents were asked questions to gain better understanding of their motivation. The survey found that for socializers, the most important elements include teamwork, relationships, and socializing while for achievers competition, mechanics, and advancement are the most important. The study also shows that more female players are socializers than male while the opposite is true for achievers. Farmville is a game targeting socializers while First Person Shooters is oriented toward both killers and achievers.
When developing computer games, it is worth defining a target audience as to focus on the elements that motivate users to play.
Earning Profits
Product manager and game producer David Mullich points out that most games in the market do not earn profit. In fact, apps that break even account for just 5 to 30 percent. He suggests three ways to market products to make money. One is to sell eyeballs to advertisers, which is paying online platforms for impressions served. Another way is to offer virtual goods for sale, which can be decorative goods or power-ups. A third option is to offer additional features, assets, or levels, again for sale. Mullich tells students that when developing computer games, there is always a risk involved. So instead of doing it solely to earn profit, it is important to find excitement in what they do. This is developing games for fun.
In general, games that have a high rating and sell well are based on a unique plot or idea. This is not enough, however, as the gaming audience wants usable products when it comes to graphics, interface, functionality, and executive system. Games that sell advertise ad-ons such as new missions, which is a good way to increase profits.
